GoCougar.co. is a global online dating site geared towards matching up older women and younger men. You'll find plenty of features to help you get in touch with members and massively discounted subscription rates. That said, it seems as if the site is in transition; a clunky and difficult to navigate site, lack of help and guidance and a lack of active members don't inspire confidence and don't help your chances of hooking up.

At first glance, there's something slightly nostalgic about GoCougar.com. The format's a little old-fashioned and desperately in need of an overhaul as, compared to some of the other sites in this category, it's a little clunky to navigate and use. In fact, GoCougar.com appears to be in something of a transition period. A lot of the features referenced on the site (e.g. using credits to use certain features) aren't there any more and the upgrade subscription prices have been slashed, presumably to try and attract members.

The membership base is something of a problem. GoCougar.com keeps the numbers of members online and registered with the site closely guarded. However, at the time of this review there were something like 7,771 female profiles and less than 20 members online. GoCougar.com has a global catchment, most members coming from the USA, Canada and Europe. As with one or two other sites in this category (e.g. ToyboyFlirt.co.uk) members are not exclusively older females and younger males, so it can feel more like a general dating site rather than specializing in cougars and toy boys.

Profiles are fairly detailed and you'll find plenty of information and features. Main profile photos are discernable but not especially large or detailed, though if you upgrade you can access all photos on a member's profile (rather than just the main thumbnail) larger and in greater detail. Another factor that points to a revamping of GoCougar.com is that their photo policy has been widened to now include mildly explicit photos of a sexual nature-all photos are still vetted and hardcore images will be removed. In addition to profile information, you'll find a couple of self-written sections. It's possible to leave comments in a profile 'guest book' or rate profiles.

From a member's profile page you can get in touch in a number of ways. Email is the default method of communication. To break the ice with a new member you can send a wink, which dispatches an automated message to break the ice. If you want to chat online there's an instant messenger feature that you can click on to invite a member to chat. You might also want to add a profile to your favorites list or send a wink. The 'send gift' tab appears to be disabled.

To help you browse, there's an array of searches, including a general search if you're not too picky, or an advanced search if you're looking for something very specific. Filters, screening out profiles without photos or listing profiles by last activity can help screen out inactive profiles. You can also save searches and click on a tab to list them all. The 'My Matches' tab attempts to match you with compatible members based on the profiles you visit. The more you use the site, the more active your matches should be. You'll need to upgrade to use all features. At the moment you'll find some crazy subscription prices, but you need to weigh this up carefully with your chances of hooking up.

Other features include 'Hot or Not' in which you can rate photos and members will be asked to rate yours, perhaps ending in a match. You'll also find a blogs feature, where you can read other members' online journals or write your own, or join in one of the discussion forums and post messages on a range of topics, mostly geared to the site and dating and relationship issues (5,822 threads, 52, 538 posts and 133,222 members when we reviewed the site). The help and FAQs pages are a little off-kilter and not so helpful in terms of membership basics, but there's email support should you need further assistance. 

GoCougar.com doesn't appear to be faring well in the online dating game and we can only hope that the ship can be turned around. Whilst you might take advantage of a bargain premium membership, GoCougar.com doesn't touch most of the other sites in this category and for this reason we advise you to hang on to your money-for now.
