CougarDate.co.uk looks great; slick, stylish and polished as well as simple to navigate and access the various features on offer. Unfortunately, when you start to scratch below the surface you'll see that what you get is more style than substance. It's strikingly similar to ToyboyFlirt.co.uk and doesn't really offer much more, but it's considerably more expensive. As so often occurs, the biggest problem is the number of incomplete profiles and lack of members online, despite having a large membership base. This ultimately scuppers your chances of finding a date.

CougarDate.com aims to match cougars and toy boys exclusively in the UK. This is a great idea if you're joining to hook up for dating rather than chatting online. Whilst all members are located in the UK, you'll notice that there are lots of younger women and plenty of older men, which surely challenges your expectations on this kind of online dating site. When we reviewed the site it was noted that 1,234 members were online and 1,030 new members had signed up that day, which is very encouraging. However, browsing profiles you'll notice that the majority are incomplete and lack any profile photos. Whether the assumption's right or wrong, it appears that CougarDate.co.uk packs less of a punch than it promises; surely, some kind of vetting process is desperately needed here.

Whilst you'll sometimes find a well-fleshed out profile, you'd be wise to think carefully before making any kind of financial commitment. It's not an especially cheap site either, though you could make a saving if you take a 6 month membership, thereby saving 50% on the normal monthly subscription rate. In practical terms, it takes a minute or two to sign up and all you need is a valid email address to validate your registration. Free members can sign up, create a profile, add a photo, use limited search tools and send and receive winks, which are automated messages sent to break the ice. The fact that there's no online chat or instant messenger seems a little strange.

If you decide to upgrade your membership, you get full email access, use of all search tools, upload multiple photos (more photos equals more interest), send virtual gifts, subscribe to mobile alerts and access the diary feature. One of the most useful features for premium members is the 'who's near me search'. This allows you to open an interactive map showing the location of all members, thus making it really easy to see exactly where other members are in relation to you. Just click on an icon to bring up that member's profile. There's also a limited custom search and a range of one-click searches listing new members and members with recently uploaded content. The recommended members option lists members matched to you based upon your activity on the site; the more you use the site, the more accurate the recommendations you'll receive. If you're feeling really flush, you might consider a membership bolt-on; highlighting your profile in search results or notifications sent to you when other members read your messages. There's a fairly useful FAQs page and plenty of guidance on the site, as well as email and telephone support 7 days a week in the UK (9.00am-10.30pm).

Despite looking great, the shortcomings of CougarDate.co.uk soon become apparent. No online chat features, a small active membership base and expensive membership terms suggest that if you're serious about hooking up a cougar or a toy boy, better to look elsewhere.
